About us

A caring, independent practice for the animals of Orkney

Founded in 2002 by local vets Liz Flett and Kate Carmichael, built on trust, experience and genuine care.

The practice

From the Clay Loan to Garrison Road

Flett & Carmichael Veterinary Surgeons was set up in 2002, when local vets Liz Flett and Kate Carmichael took over the small single-handed veterinary practice at the bottom of the Clay Loan in Kirkwall.

They quickly outgrew the original building, and in the summer of 2003 the practice relocated to its current site at 1 Garrison Road on the Hatston Industrial Estate.

Liz and Kate's vision was to provide a high quality, compassionate veterinary service to the animals of Orkney. We pride ourselves on our caring team and believe that our staff are our most important asset. The practice has grown over the years and our building has been extended to accommodate it.

In March 2019 Liz stepped back from running the practice, allowing Moira Sinclair and John Davidson to join Kate as partners. As long-term members of the team, they are keen to stay true to the values on which the practice was established.

Our values

Dedicated to our clients and the care of their animals

Our team is passionate about caring for our patients and providing a service tailored to each individual client's needs.

Trust

We want our relationship to be based on honesty and trust. We always take the time to explain our findings and discuss investigation and treatment options, and we listen and answer your questions so that together we can shape treatment plans that work for you and your animals.

Continuity of care is paramount: we aim for you to see the same vet wherever possible, so we get to know you and your animals a whole lot better.

Experience

The veterinary surgeons at Flett & Carmichael have over 100 years of combined veterinary experience. All our team share a passion for delivering the kind of care we would all like to receive for our own pets, horses and livestock.

Attending courses and conferences keeps our knowledge and skills at the forefront of veterinary medicine.

Caring

A visit to the vets should be relaxed and as comfortable as possible for you and your animals. You'll be greeted with genuine warmth and a familiar smile by a team who truly care.

We have raised cat shelves in our waiting area and separate dog and cat wards with music playing. Our experienced nursing team care for your pet while they're with us, and out of hours your animals are cared for by the same team you know and trust.
